Military Service |
I was drafted into the Army 4/64 – 4/66, basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky, then to Ft. Eustis, Va., the Army Transportation Center, and became a seaman with the 1098th Transportation Co (medium boat). I had been sailing on the Great Lakes for Inland Steel as an Able Bodied merchant seaman since 11/59. Our company flew over to Quinhon, South Vietnam in 5/65, very early in that conflict. I returned to the U.S. 3/66 to Great Lakes Naval Hospital to recover from 3rd degree, non combat leg burns. I recovered, was discharged on time, and returned to my wheelsman job on an Inland Steel ore boat. | |
